When I was studying in school my teacher asked me what do you want to become in future I said I want to become a scientist. It was not only my answer some other kids also gave the similar answer and some other want to become doctor engineer as well.  At that moment I was thinking how to become Scientist I am sure it is a dream job for several people. However, I was not very good in studies and always been an average student but when I reach 12th class I still want to become scientist due to my hobbies and interests.

Basic requirements

NASA is under United states federal agency so the most basic requirement is that the candidate must have US citizenship. Thankfully there is no age restriction for this job and astronaut candidates ranging the age between 26 years to 46 years are already selected in the past. An average candidate meeting all the criteria and mostly selected are of the age of 34 years. Whereas educational qualification required is masters degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Experience is also important and the applicant must have minimum 2 years relevant professional experience. If he or she doesn’t have 2 years relevant experience then they must have at least 1000 hours of pilot in command time in jet aircraft. For the astronaut candidate position teaching experience and experience at k -12 level is a qualifying experience but the provided degree should be in science, mathematics or engineering fields. Education is very important for this scientist job so there are some other possible options given to the candidates and they have to meet at least these options which are given below. 

Requirement for masters degree (few more options)

  • Experience of two years working towards Ph.D program in related science, technology, engineering or math field. In 2 years 36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours required. 
  • Doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine degree is required. 
  • Pilot school program completion is required. It is a nationally recognized test. 

Physical requirements 

Each eye distance and near vision acuity must be correctable to 20/20. 

However, the refractive surgical procedure of the eye PRK and LASIK is allowed but not required for the potential candidates.

During the interview it will be evaluated to ensure that applicants meet anthropometric requirements.
