1 Dr Frank B.McDonald

Frank was born in Columbus Georgia on May 28 1925. He served as a NASA chief scientist from 1982 to 1987. Frank was the first chief scientist of NASA, he was an American astrophysicist. He helped in designing scientific instruments for research flights in space. Frank played a major role in launching NASA’s Teacher in Space project. This project was important to connect children with science and space exploration.

After retirement, he joined the Institute for Physical Science and Technology at Maryland University in 1989.

2 Dr Noel Hinners 

Noel remains NASA’s chief scientist from the period of 1987 to 1989. He was born on 25 December 1935 in Brooklyn. He was an American geologist and soil chemist, he worked in various scientific roles from 1963 to 1989. In 1997 he received NASA’s distinguished service medal. 

3 Dr France A Cordova

Mrs France served as NASA’s chief scientist from the period of 1993 to 1996. She was born on 5 August 1947 in America. She was an American astrophysicist and administrator and was the 14th director of the National Science Foundation.

4 Dr Kathie L Olsen

She did the Nasa chief scientist job from 24 May 1999 to 2002. Kathie was an American neuroscientist well-known for her work in scientific policy. She was the Deputy Director and Chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation (US govt agency) between 2005 and 2009. 

5 Dr Shanon Lucid

She performed as NASA’s chief scientist from 2002 to September 2003. Lucid was an American Biotech and retired NASA astronaut. She flew into space 5 times and is the only American woman who stayed on Mir.

6 Dr John M Grunsfeld

John was NASA’s chief scientist from 2003 to 2004. He was an American physicist and a former NASA astronaut. He retired from NASA in 2009 and served as deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. 

7 Dr James B Garvin

He was NASA’s chief scientist from 2004 to September 2005. In NASA’s Mars exploration programmes, James was responsible for foundation work. Garvin was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. 

8 Dr Waleed Abdalati 

He worked as NASA’s chief scientist from 3 January 2011 to December 2012. He also served NASA as head of Cryospheric Sciences at Goddard Space Flight Centre between Jan 2004 to June 2008. 

9 Dr Ellen Stofan

Ellen was NASA’s chief scientist from 25 August 2013 to Dec 2016. She was born on 24 February 1961. Smithsonian is a group of museums and she is an undersecretary at Smithsonian. Previously she was John and Adrienne Mars Director at the National Air and Space Museum.

10 Dr Jim Geen 

Dr Jim Geen is a retired NASA scientist who served from 1 May 2018 to December 2021. He was number 10th chief scientist of NASA

11 Dr Katherine Calvin

Katherine is NASA’s current chief scientist. She was appointed in 2022 and still serving as a head.
