NASA initial plan for the astronauts return was Boeing’s Starliner but the recent update shows that they might need to return aboard spacex’s crew dragon. It was Boeing’s first human space flight. It seems to transform Boeing’s first human space flight into a challenging rescue mission by Elon Musk’s spacex. Significantly extending the mission from the planned 8 days to over 8 months this is the reason behind the delay. Eight months is a long period to stay in space which is now creating concern about astronauts’ mental and physical health.
NASA return plan
NASA’s Associate Administrator for space operations Kenneth Bowersox addressed health concerns during the press conference. He said 8 months is a long period and we have options to bring them back from another vehicle.
NASA commercial crew program manager Steve Stich highlighted Elon Musk’s spacex name for the astronauts return program. Returning Butch and Suni on crew 9 is NASA’s plan B to save their astronauts. He said that they have been working with spacex to ensure that they are ready to respond on crew 9. The plan contains modification of crew 9 but NASA has yet to finalise the details.
Risks – Space radiation, zero gravity, psychological strains are some major obstacles that astronauts often face during their space journey.
